Tiara Tales: A Love Affair with Royal Heirlooms
By The Lilac Tree
There’s something undeniably magical about a tiara.
The way it catches the light, the weight of history it carries, the sense of occasion it evokes — I’ve been enchanted by these glittering heirlooms for as long as I can remember.
My fascination began in childhood, leafing through books filled with regal portraits. But it was royal bridal tiaras that truly captured my heart — symbols of elegance, tradition, and timeless style. They weren’t just beautiful; they told stories. Of love, of legacy, of women stepping into history.
As a designer of bridal headpieces with a love for vintage charm, these royal treasures continue to inspire everything I create here at The Lilac Tree.
The Royal Tiaras That Inspire Me
Queen Mary’s Fringe Tiar
Originally made for Queen Mary in 1919 from a diamond necklace, this striking tiara has become a royal bridal icon. Worn by Queen Elizabeth II, Princess Anne, and Princess Beatrice — it carries with it a sense of continuity and strength.
I love its dramatic, architectural beauty. Every time I design a statement piece, I think of this tiara’s commanding presence — strong yet graceful.
The Cartier Halo Tiara
Delicate elegance with modern simplicity.
Given to the Queen Mother by King George VI, this tiara has a soft scrollwork design and an Art Deco feel. It was made famous when worn by Catherine, Princess of Wales, for her 2011 wedding.
What draws me to it is its quiet refinement — understated but filled with meaning. It’s the perfect symbol of timeless romance and subtle sparkle.
The Lotus Flower Tiara
Floral charm and whimsical spirit.
Archives New Zealand reference: AGGM 25027 WHAT
Once a necklace, transformed into a tiara by the Queen Mother in the 1920s. This floral design, loved by Princess Margaret, now occasionally appears on the Princess of Wales.
Its lotus-shaped detail and airy feel make it a favourite of mine. Romantic, floral, and full of Art Deco personality — it captures a kind of wild elegance I often bring into my bridal designs.
The Strathmore Rose Tiara
Soft, vintage, and utterly romantic.
A gift to the Queen Mother from her father, this tiara is a true vintage treasure. With wild rose motifs and a soft, ethereal presence, it’s perhaps the most mysterious and quietly beautiful of them all.
I love its botanical detailing — almost as if it were gathered from a moonlit garden. Its rarity and charm are a perfect match for The Lilac Tree’s vintage-inspired aesthetic.
What These Tiaras Mean to Me
To me, these tiaras are more than historical jewels — they’re vessels of memory and meaning. Each one tells a story: of women stepping into a new chapter, of family, of personal style made eternal.
That’s what I aim to create for every bride I work with — whether through my Bespoke Design Service or pieces in my Vintage Collection. Something heartfelt, personal, and destined to become a treasured part of your story.
